There are a lot of sincere believing people who struggle with spirituality. There is a lot of confusion about how to be spiritual; how to get close to God. Many devotedly follow a religion expecting to find God or at least get help they believe they need. Religions and their programs often supply leaders and rules which they promote as a way to achieve spiritual goals and spirituality itself. Their promises are as boundless as they are groundless. A return to the fundamental principles Jesus taught will help. So here’s a few starting points:
1. Jesus wasn’t a devote Jew. His disciples weren’t devout either. He had little use for the very religious.
2. Jesus didn’t follow or worry about the rules. Especially not the rules about the sabbath.
3. Jesus didn’t financially support the religion of his day.
4. Jesus gave much to the poor. Almost exclusively.
5. Jesus; the example, didn’t even baptize. I don’t think it mattered to him.
6. Jesus made it clear that love was a verb; something you physically did.
7. Love God and love your fellow man, are the two most fundamental commandments. The rest of the commandments naturally come from obedience to those two rules.
8. All religious rules and requirements beyond these are of men; feel free to ignore them when they don’t help.
9. Jesus died for each of us. He didn’t die for a religion. He died because of the religious.
10. Jesus’s teaching point us to look inside our hearts, not to a religion, for true spiritual worth.
I have been richly blessed. I am one of the lucky ones who has been in touch with the divine and blessed with many spiritual experiences. But I am not special. There is nothing gifted or innate about me that I should be chosen as I have been. I have been pressed several times to share what I have been shown and taught. I have been listening to podcasts and searching my heart to try to pin down a few things that may be of benefit for those who seek a relationship with the divine. I should here point out there there are sources of spiritual guidance that are far better than anything I have to offer. It’s saddens me when people confine their spiritual sources to writings from 2 millennia ago. There are sources for spiritual guidance today that are as superior to the Bible as todays engineers are to ancient Greece engineers.
